“Guide to Peyronie’s Disease Current Research Rehabilitation Treatments”
By Mark Newell, Ph.D.; Leading Authority on Peyronie’s Disease Rehabilitation

Peyronie's Disease is the name given to a condition in males that causes a bend or curvature in the penis during an erection. In some cases, the condition is mild, in others if can be so severe and painful as to prevent intercourse.

This condition that can affect males at any age. The actual causes are unknown. It is often attributed to injury to the penis from some external cause, but it can also occur spontaneously - with no obvious cause.

The curvature is caused by "plaque" or hardened tissue that forms in the tough outer lining of the penis. This is a sheath-like tissue under the skin. When an erection occurs, the soft, expandable tissue of the penis begins to fill with blood and the internal pressure - which can be well above normal blood pressure - creating the erection.

This expansion process encounters a problem in a penis that has plaque or scar tissue. The hardened tissue does not expand. As the tissues around it do expand a bend in the penis forms.

This condition is mentioned in medical texts that date back hundreds of years. It was first studied scientifically by a French Physician whose name was Peyronie - so that is what the disease is called today. For many years there was no treatment. As surgical skills and techniques became more sophisticated, surgeons began to treat the problem by cutting out the plaque. In many cases this was successful. In some cases, the surgery itself causes a new scar.

Nine years ago USPhysioMED was the first company in America to experiment with the effects of traction therapy on Peyronie's Disease. The company sponsored a clinical trial conducted by Dr. Laurence Levine, Rush University of Chicago. Dr. Levine is regarded as one of the world's leading urologists and researchers.

The trial proved that traction therapy treats the disease by stretching the plaque and forcing it to break up - thus reducing the curvature. Dr. Levine and many other leading Urologists have been associated with USPhysioMED since this time.
